The Coastal Arts Center sits right on Wolf Bay off Canal Road, east of Highway 161 near the library and next door to Waterfront Park — a two-story, 10,000-square-foot fine art gallery run by the city, filled with working Gulf Coast artists, and completely free to walk through. The bay views out the back are the kind other venues charge for, which is why it also books out for weddings and events. It’s a short drive from the condo towers on Perdido Beach Boulevard and about the only cultural stop in Orange Beach that doesn’t involve a boat.
The Hot Shop
The reason most people actually come. It’s a real glassblowing studio — the city calls it Alabama’s premier one — where you make your own piece with an artist guiding you. There’s a Clay Studio too, for wheel-throwing and hand-building. Both are appointment-only, so call ahead rather than walking in hoping, and ask about the age minimum for the glass when you book. Fair warning: your glass float will look better than you expect and you will want another one.
Who it’s for
Rainy-day families, mostly, plus anyone who’s been to the beach four days running and needs a change of scenery. Kids’ classes run year-round through CASA, the Coastal Arts Student Academy, and there are summer art camps and adult classes on a rotating schedule. The gallery has a scavenger hunt for the kids, which buys the adults enough time to actually look at the art.
Good to know
It’s a weekday operation — closed weekends, which surprises people, so check the site before you drive over. The gift shop is stocked by local artists, so it’s the honest answer to “where do I get a souvenir that isn’t airbrushed.” Pair it with the park next door and you’ve built a free morning that doesn’t involve sand.
