Bodacious Bookstore & Cafe is an independent bookstore with a cafe attached, on East Intendencia Street in downtown Pensacola, a block or so off the Palafox Street strip. It is not in Perdido Key or on Pensacola Beach — figure on a 30 to 40 minute drive from the Key, longer in summer traffic — but it is the kind of stop that makes a rainy-day trip into town worth it. The pitch is simple: a carefully chosen shelf rather than a warehouse, staff who have actually read the things they are recommending, and coffee to drink while you decide.
What you get
The selection leans curated over exhaustive. If you want a specific obscure title, they can likely order it; if you want to walk in without a plan and leave with something good, that is where a shop like this earns its keep. There is a dedicated Young Readers section, which matters when you have a kid who has burned through everything in the condo. The cafe side gives you a reason to sit down, and the shop runs events — check their site for the current calendar, because author visits and kids’ programming come and go.
Who it’s for
Beach-week readers restocking, families looking for something indoors that isn’t a mall, and anyone who prefers to buy books from a person. Pair it with lunch downtown and a walk down Palafox and you have a decent half-day away from the sand. They also keep an online shop if you fall for something and can’t carry it home.
Getting there
Downtown Pensacola parking is street and garage, and Intendencia is a short walk from most of it. From Perdido Key it is 292 east through Warrington and on into downtown. Before you go, glance at the Pensacola Beach area page and the beach report in case the weather clears and you’d rather be outside.
