Getaway runs two nearly identical 46-foot Hatteras sportfishers out of Zeke’s Landing — Getaway and Another Getaway — which tells you something about how they think: found a formula that works, built it twice. Capt. Don McPherson’s operation has planted its flag on family fishing, and it’s not marketing garnish; they run dedicated kids trips and the crews are known for actually working with beginners instead of just baiting hooks and staring at the horizon.
The boats
Each Hatteras takes up to six passengers, with a climate-controlled cabin, overnight berths for six, and proper electronics — Furuno radar, Simrad. Comfortable boats for a long day, which is half the battle with a young crew aboard.
The trips
Four-hour nearshore runs for the short-attention-span set, 6-to-8-hour offshore days, full days, and overnights. The catch list runs snapper, triggerfish, amberjack, mackerel, grouper, mahi, and wahoo — plus shark trips, where bull sharks from 100 to 300-plus pounds are the draw. Kids remember the shark trip.
Good to know
Fishing license and tackle are included, so the only homework is sunscreen and snacks. Red snapper season runs June 1 through late October, seven days a week — book summer dates early.
